Back up generator

Hi all.
I'm new to everything solar so bear with me.
I have a system which theoretically can stand alone off grid. I'm considering adding a diesel generator for emergency power through winter/dark days. Can anyone recommend a set up ? Has anyone on here done this ? As a Devon based glamping business we are closed through the winter months and as such we consume relatively little electric . No electric heating, cooking , gsh pumps , nothing like that. We heat our home with wood and have lpg for hot water. We generally get by on around 1kw apart from kettle being boiled etc but we do have a bore hole and the pump in there is I think around 3000w but only kicks in to boost pressure for around 10 seconds at a time .
What type of generator would be best ? What size ? How would it be physically added onto the system ? Is there another alternative to Diesel?
There must be an awful lot of people using solar completely off grid ?
Any advice greatly appreciated .
J

I think the short answer is there arn't many users that run like this.

The bigger 3 phase inverters actually have a generator input, the normal domestic (H, KH etc..) do not.

The biggest problem with grid tied inverters is they need a stable grid voltage / frequency for them to operate and the standard UK grid tolerances are typically a bit too tight for many smaller generators.

That said with a good generator and a stable output it should be possible, I have tested my H1 with a small generator and with some changes got it working - but there is a thread here viewtopic.php?p=7207#p7207 below my post where a KH user has done something similar and he got it working.
