Cold Battery Protection Box

Hi everyone,

Following on from some others here that had the issue of cold batteries not charging below 15 degrees, I took the plunge and built a nice insulated box for the garage and the batteries are now sitting at 22 degrees on a winters night. I was getting 10-11 degrees on a night and the 3-phase charge was limited to 1.7Kwh which was a massive issues to night time fast charging on 3-phase.

It's not 100% finished but a lot better and good for the colder nights in the UK as we head into winter.

I used 11mm board with 50mm PIR bonded to the board. PIR for the floor with an airgap underneath and around battery feet. 300mm airgap all around with a 120mm top air gap.

I'll tape the edges once its all locked down, have the lid fixings to install and then it's completed. But I'm rather happy for 4-5 hours work. Pictures 1-20 in order

Just sharing the pictures if people are interested.

Good work, that looks good.

I’ve knocked up today a cover for an EP11 heated battery that’s outside, I have a cover over the battery so this encloses the cover. Advice from the installers is that there is no issue enclosing the battery for winter use.
Used 50mm insulation board.
Used a sheet of 300mu DPM as a waterproof cover.
Appears to work, temp has risen 3C in 4 hours since putting it over the battery to 16.5, will be interested what it will be in the morning after force charging tonight.

Looks good, this is the way to go right, just wish my batteries came with a internal heater for the price I paid! :-)

Getting a good temp now, 19 - 21 degrees depending on outside temps but works well.

Yes, it does seem to be making a difference. Outside temp is 6C, normally battery would be around 12C as heater would have kicked in, currently 22.0C without need for any heating.
I’m keen to see what effect it has when we start getting sub zero temps.
Cost about £35 to put together, well worth the cost.
